How the world's largest concentrated solar power project works
Modern technologies create opportunities for any state to switch to renewable sources of cheap energy from water, wind, or the sun.
But for this to happen, of course, efforts must be made and several large-scale reforms and projects implemented, as was done, for instance, in Morocco. How did this country manage to build the largest concentrated solar power plant that generates electricity even at night?
And what has enabled Morocco, which has meager oil and gas reserves, to become the largest energy importer in the Middle East and North Africa?
Check out our video! Morocco is the only country in North Africa that does not have its own fossil fuel reserves and imports more than 90% of its energy resources. Attempts to develop the industry led to electricity consumption increasing by 5.6% ...

Since 2009, the price of solar energy has come down by 90 percent. That’s no accident. It’s the result of policy interventions from the US to Germany to China.
As policy analyst Gregory Nemet puts it, “No one country is responsible. It was a relay race rather than a competition.” The global flow of knowledge, people, technology, and policy helped bring down the price per watt from more than $100 in 1976 to less than $0.50 today, according to this analysis from the folks at Our World in Data. https://ourworldindata.org/cheap-renewables-growth

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is a solar park located in Saih Al-Dahal, about 50 kilometres south of the city of Dubai. It covers a total area of 77 km2. Based on the independent power producer (IPP) model, it is one of the biggest renewable energy projects in the world. The long-term project will also feature concentrating solar power in addition to solar farms using PV technology (CSP). The overall project is expected to have a capacity of 3,000 megawatts. As the winning bid of the tender set a new record-low tariff of just US $5.89 per kilowatt-hour, the 200-megawatt second phase of the project attracted interest on a global scale. This is around 20% less than any other unsubsidized power purchase agreement (PPA) that has ever been witnessed in the history of the globe.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority put in the plant (DEWA). On October 22, 2013, the project's initial phase was put into operation. The solar PV complex's producing capacity at the end of 2020 was 1.013 GW, and its goal is to achieve 5 GW by 2030. The fourth (700 MW CSP + 250 MW PV) and fifth (900 MW PV) phases are currently being built.

The Dubai solar park is the largest single-site solar energy project in the world, with a planned total production capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030, and a total investment of USD 13.6 billion.
The UAE has taken early steps to bid farewell to the last barrel of oil, and achieve a balance between development and maintaining a clean, healthy, and safe environment. The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 aims to achieve an energy mix that combines renewable and clean energy sources to balance economic requirements and environmental goals. The UAE will invest AED 600 billion until 2050 to meet the growing energy demand and ensure the sustainable growth of the economy. The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, which was launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aims to provide 25% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2030. This target will increase to 75% by 2050. Dubai is the only city in the region to have launched such a promising strategy, with set goals and timelines that map the future of energy until 2050. In January 2012, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum announced the launch of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in Dubai.
1st Phase (13MW using photovoltaic solar panels) 01:16
The 13MW first phase became operational on 22 October 2013, comprising around 152,000 photovoltaic cells, connected to 13 transformers in inverter buildings. The output is transformed to 33 kilovolts (kV) and generates nearly 28 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually. The first phase contributes to an annual reduction of about 15,000 tones of carbon emissions.
2nd Phase (200MW using photovoltaic solar panels) 01:45
The 200MW second phase of the solar park will provide clean energy to 50,000 residences in the Emirate, reducing 214,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. This phase installed 2.3 million photovoltaic solar panels over an area of 4.5 square kilometers. Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) set a world record by obtaining the lowest price globally at USD 5.6 cents per kWh for the second phase of the park at the time of the tender.
3rd Phase (800MW using photovoltaic solar panels) 02:54
In June 2016, DEWA announced the selection of the Masdar-led consortium as the best bidder to develop the 800 MW third phase of the solar park. DEWA also set a world record by obtaining the lowest price of USD 2.99 cents per kWh for the third phase of the park, based on the IPP model. The first 200 MW project became operational on 1 May 2018, with the second and third projects being implemented in stages until 2020. The project uses 806,992 photovoltaic polycrystalline panels on a total area of 4.48 square kilometers. Nearly 1,700 workers spent 2.4 million safe work hours without injuries to implement the project.
4th Phase (950MW of CSP and PV) 03:57
It is the largest single-site Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project in the world, based on the IPP model. The lowest Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE) is USD 7.3 cents per kWh. The fourth phase will use three technologies to produce clean energy: 600MW from a parabolic basin complex, 100MW from a concentrated solar tower, and 250MW from photovoltaic panels. The fourth phase of the solar park has achieved many world records. It will have the world’s tallest solar tower, at 260 meters, and the largest thermal energy storage capacity in the world of 15 hours, which allows for energy generation round the clock. It also achieved the lowest Levelised Cost of Electricity (LCOE) of 2.4 US cents per kilowatt-hour (kW/h) for the 250MW photovoltaic solar panels technology and USD 7.3 cents per kW/h for the 700MW CSP technology, the lowest worldwide. Meeting the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 targets requires a capacity of 42,000MW of clean and renewable energy by 2050.

Attempts to develop the industry led to electricity consumption increasing by 5.6% per year, and there is nowhere to take it within the country. The government spends billions of dollars importing fuel.
To rid the state of energy dependence, King Mohammed VI set a goal: To generate 52% of electricity needs using green energy by 2030.
But how will it be achieved? Hydro resources in Morocco are bad; most of the rivers dry up, and reservoirs built in the 1960s provide the population with drinking water, but their energy resource is limited. In 2008 the authorities adopted the New Energy Strategy.

If we can learn the right lessons from solar’s success, it could help us develop and deploy the technology we need to keep our planet habitable and avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
